Topaz crystals have been held in high regard as gemstones from classical times, though they went under the name of 'chrysoprasios', the golden stone, and not 'topazios'.

Blue topaz is also the 4th and 19th anniversary gemstone for a marriage. The 23rd year of marriage is celebrated with an Imperial topaz.
